Studenten Toneelvereniging Amsterdam (STA!) performs ‘Moonrise Kingdom’
Twelve students perform the play ‘Moonrise Kingdom’, directed by Jolijn Wendel. The coming-age-play is performed by STA!’s English theatre group. Based on the American movie by Wes Anderson, it tells the story of two young lovers who run away into the wilderness and get to know each other, themselves and teenage life. On 1,2 and 3 April ‘Moonrise Kingdom’ will be performed in the CREA theatre in Amsterdam.
On an island in New England, 12-year-old orphan Sam is attending Camp Ivanhoe, a Khaki Scout camp. Suzy, also 12, lives on the same island with her parents Walt and Laura, both lawyers, and her three younger brothers. Sam doesn’t feel at home at the scout camp and Suzy feels she doesn’t fit in with her family. Sam and Suzy meet when Suzy is performing in a church play Sam is watching with his scout troop. They become pen pals from that day on and plan to run away together.
While the whole community -Sam’s scout troop, Suzy’s family, the police- starts searching for the two, we see the adults struggle with love, embarrassment, pride, uncertainty, awkwardness while the teenagers make clear decisions.
